Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to challenge specific rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
