The United Kingdom Ready to Use Immobilized Russia's Assets to Fund Ukraine's War Effort
The United Kingdom is prepared to move forward with employing the full worth of immobilized Russian assets to bolster the Ukrainian defense operations, PM Sir Keir Starmer has declared.
In a collective announcement, the heads of state of the Britain, the French Republic, and the Federal Republic of Germany asserted that this coordinated action would heighten pressure on Russia's leader Vladimir Putin and persuade Moscow to participate in talks.
They clarified that the move would be executed in tight collaboration with the US.
British penalties have immobilized more than £25bn of Russia's assets since the Russian government launched its comprehensive attack against Ukraine in 2022. However, until now, money allocated to Ukraine using Russia's funds had only been drawn from profits and interest generated on them.
Sir Keir informed Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelensky that the United Kingdom, France, and the Federal Republic of Germany were aligned in their aim to push forward toward utilizing the total worth of the seized Russian sovereign assets to halt hostilities.
He added that more measures over the next period would heighten the tension on Moscow.
This announcement follows European officials convened in Copenhagen last week to discuss using seized Russia's funds for a €140 billion loan to the Ukrainian nation.
In the previous month, US President Donald Trump urged Group of Seven partners to take or otherwise use frozen Russian assets, as reported by news outlets.
The worth of seized Russia's holdings in the European Union is estimated to be nearly €211bn.
Leader Zelensky encourages the United Kingdom's Sir Keir Starmer to join the Purl initiative
Moscow carried out large-scale aerial attacks throughout the Ukrainian territory on recently, leading to blackouts in significant regions of Kyiv, Kyiv, and several other zones.
Several persons were killed and a minimum of 20 people were injured in the attack, the Ukrainian government reported.
In a post on an online platform after the attack, Zelensky wrote that the strategic strike targeted civilian and energy infrastructure.
"The necessity is not just talk but concrete steps - from the America, Europe, and the seven nations - in supplying anti-aircraft weapons and implementing sanctions," he wrote.
"Every sanction decision diminishes the Russian war effort," Zelensky noted, in a different message.
Also on Friday, Zelensky stated to media outlets he would encourage Sir Keir to join the Purl program, under which Nato countries buy military equipment from the America to give to the Ukrainian forces.
While applauding the United Kingdom's consistent assistance for the Ukrainian government, he said it should indicate firmly that it would engage in the initiative, as well as enforce more restrictions on Russia.
