The Two Fatalities Identified in the Providence Campus Incident as Law Enforcement Press On With Hunt for Perpetrator.
Both young individuals who were killed in the weekend's tragic incident in Providence were being remembered Monday – while an intensive search for their shooter continued following the freeing by authorities in Rhode Island of the only individual of interest in the case.
Honoring a Lost Student
Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was described as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, as stated by the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a service on Sunday.
Cook was the vice-presidency of Brown’s branch of the campus GOP group, according to the organization. The White House press secretary also posted condolences publicly, saying in part: “It's indescribable. Remembering her loved ones and companions, above all her mom and dad.”
MukhammadAziz Umurzokov
The other person killed was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his freshman year at the renowned school, family members said.
The victim's identification was confirmed by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.
“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. His ambitions were lofty of entering the field of neurosurgery and assisting patients,” his sibling Samira said in a memorial statement.
Details of the Attack
An additional nine individuals were wounded in the violent event in the engineering department of Brown’s university in Providence, during the school’s final exam period.
Authorities said by the end of Sunday that a 24-year-old male detained in a police operation at a Hampton Inn about approximately 17 miles from the campus earlier in the day was set to be freed.
“A perpetrator remains free,” declared the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.
Neronha explained, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you need to change course and head another way, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last approximately one day.”
Public Fear
The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “It is expected to provoke renewed concern for our community”.
The shooter began shooting inside a lecture hall in the building on over the weekend, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a 9mm handgun, a police source reported to the news agency.
Law enforcement that raided the inn found a pair of pistols and two ammunition clips when the individual was detained, as was reported.
Those Hurt
Among those wounded, one student was allowed to go home, mentioned Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in serious yet stable state, and one remained in critical care, officials reported on Sunday.
Durham Academy, a private K-12 school in North Carolina, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.
Further Tributes
Cook was remembered at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only during her upbringing... but at Brown University she was an incredible light in that institution as well.”
The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the club. “Ella was known for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she aided her club and other students,” he said.
An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of Umurzokov in a statement. “Our profound condolences go out to the Umurzokov family, loved ones, and fellow students and grieve for of his bright future.”
National Context
The weekend's murders at Brown, the country's seventh most historic university with about over seven thousand undergraduate and 3,000 graduate students, happened during one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings documented across the United States so far in this year, according to statistics. The following Monday was the 349th day of the year.
