The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a clamor for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and delight the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
