The Former President's Progressive Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an grave threat to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The actual danger confronting Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, about half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap prompts a vital question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Experts widely concede it is essentially a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is split among 27 different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains significant advantages: skilled workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
