The British fighter chose to relinquish her world championship belt on recently as a form of protest against existing rules in women’s boxing, demanding the opportunity to fight in extended rounds like male counterparts.
The boxer’s move to give up her world title stems from her strong opposition with the World Boxing Council’s mandate that female fighters compete in two-minute rounds, which the 34-year-old views as unfair standards.
“The sport for women has made great strides, but there’s still progress to be made,” the boxer declared. “I firmly believe in equal treatment and that includes the option to fight equal rounds, the same chances, and the same recognition.”
The fighter was promoted to WBC super-lightweight world champion when the previous title holder was designated “inactive champion” as she stepped away from professional fighting. The WBC was preparing for a financial bid on recently for a fight between Cameron and compatriot her potential opponent.
In late 2023, Amanda Serrano likewise vacated her championship after the council would not authorize her to participate in bouts under the same rule-set as male boxing, with 12 three-minute rounds.
The organization’s leader, the president, had stated before that they would not sanction extended rounds in female matches. “In tennis women play 3 sets, in basketball the hoop is lower and the ball smaller and those are less physical sports. We stand by the health and protection of the boxers,” he commented on social media.
Most women’s title fights have ten rounds of two minutes each each, and Cameron was part of numerous athletes – such as Serrano – who started a movement in last year to have the right to fight under the same rules as male boxers.
The athlete, who holds a strong career statistics, stated clearly that her stand is more than personal preference, describing it as a fight for the next wave of female boxers. “I’m proud of my achievement in becoming a title holder, but it’s right to protest for justice and for the future of the sport,” she continued.
The fighter is not retiring from professional fighting completely, however, with her representatives her team indicating she intends to seek other championship opportunities and prestigious matches while persisting in her requirement on competing in longer duration fights.
