The future president of the prestigious debating society has been ousted from office after failing a vote of confidence that came after his controversial social media posts about the conservative activist.

The motion against the student leader achieved the required two-thirds threshold to remove him from office, according to an announcement from the organization.

Disputed Comments

The controversy began after the student reportedly shared messages on social media that appeared to celebrate the killing of Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead while speaking at a college in Utah.

According to sources, one Instagram post reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.

The president-elect is also said to have written in a WhatsApp chat with other members appearing to welcome the incident.

Election Results

The no-confidence motion took place over the weekend, with outcomes announced on Tuesday.

Society announcements indicated that 1,228 ballots were cast supporting removal, while just over five hundred were against the motion.

The notice stated that the president-elect was considered to have stepped down in following the Oxford Union's rules.

Procedural Disputes

Voting operations were temporarily halted early on Monday after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from multiple individuals.

In a response, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the count had been halted because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".

His response unequivocally denied that any representative appointed by George had engaged in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Ongoing Dispute

The student maintained that extremely serious issues had been referred to the governing body and that he continued as the elected leader.

His statement added that George was "grateful and honored to have the support of significantly more than half of students at Oxford" who supported a "secure voting process and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".

Opponents have argued that any failure to remove him would "signal to the world that the society has prioritized politics over principles".

External Reactions

On Friday, Kirk's former chief of staff read out an public message to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.

The letter criticized the society of becoming a place where "student leaders publicly celebrate the killing of a political opponent".

The statement indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, supporters would "personally contact every U.S. political figure who has ever graced the union's chamber and urge them never again to lend their name".

The society had previously condemned the student's remarks after the activist's killing and stated that concerns submitted about him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.

The student leader had been one of several students to debate with Kirk at the union in May.
