Snapshots as well as Singing as People of Ethiopia Observe Gratitude Festival
Countless individuals of colorfully attired attendees assembled in the heart of the city center for the traditional thanksgiving festival during recent days.
Irreecha is honored by the Oromo, Ethiopia's largest population group, and is held at the conclusion of the country's major monsoon period.
Each year, celebrants gather around holy water bodies to give thanks to their divine beings for the lush vegetation that the rains have delivered.
"I have participated in the festival for the past nine years," stated twenty-five-year-old one attendee.
"In my view, Irreecha embodies my cultural background, it demonstrates the honor and greatness of my people."
Men, females, the senior citizens and the youth all take part, adorned in eye-catching clothes and jewellery.
They sing, perform traditional dances, tell tales and deposit freshly cut green plants and flowers in liquid - symbolizing life, renewal and optimism.
Global Attendance
The celebration not only draws people from all regions of Ethiopia, attendees fly in from around the world.
"I came last year - the experience was amazing, so spectacular, I brought my children with me currently," expressed Claire, originating from Belfast in Northern Ireland.
"It's wonderful. All people wants to say hello, all attendees wants to give you a kiss and expresses hospitality."
Event Timeline
The opening day of the celebration occurred on Saturday in the capital. On the following day, festival-goers journeyed to a nearby town, a community near the urban center.
While this celebration has its origins in traditional beliefs, it is now observed by the bulk of Oromos, irrespective of their faith.
Contemporary Trends
In the past decade, the figure of individuals joining the festival has expanded substantially. This is partially because of the growth of digital platforms, where various youth document their attire, traditional dances and singing during the gathering.
Past Significance
In the past, the festival was served as a platform for anti-government protests - the Oromo community have long complained about systemic disadvantages.
Nevertheless, the latest gathering unfolded peacefully, with an emphasis on happiness, unity and cultural pride.
