Former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James the former director has pleaded not guilty to giving untrue testimony to lawmakers and impeding a lawmaking procedure.
Mr Comey's lawyer filed the response on his behalf in a US district court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday.
Patrick Fitzgerald announced he would try to have the proceedings terminated for various causes including that his defendant, a critic of President Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.
James Comey was formally accused soon after Donald Trump pushed his top legal official to move forward against him.
In court on Wednesday, the defense counsel the legal representative told the magistrate they intended to submit several petitions to terminate the case before a trial, claiming the government's case was retaliatory and that a government lawyer was wrongfully appointed to take over the case.
Mr Comey's case was originally handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under scrutiny from Donald Trump after his examination into an additional rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to initiate prosecution.
The former director appeared in positive mood as he came into the courtroom on Wednesday, speaking with his legal team and sharing humor. He was accompanied by his spouse, Mrs Failor and offspring his daughter, a US lawyer who the Trump administration dismissed.
Following the reading to the judge read his constitutional guarantees and the two counts against him in court on Wednesday, the defendant was asked if he grasped the accusations.
"I do your honour. Thank you," he informed the proceedings.
James Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from four years and was dismissed about several months into Trump's first administration as commander-in-chief. At the moment, he was directing an probe into international campaign influence and whether there were any connections between Russia and the election effort.
Throughout his leadership, the director caused a negative reaction from Democrats when he declared just immediately preceding the 2016 election that he was probing Democratic candidate Clinton's use of a personal email system. Legal actions against the candidate were not filed, resulting in disapproval from the Republican party as well.
Prosecutors claim the former director gave untrue statements to Congress during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the Clinton investigation as well as the election interference investigation. They allege he misled the upper house by stating he had not approved someone at the FBI to leak to media organizations information about the agency probes.
Legal representatives also accuse the defendant of "wrongfully trying to sway, hinder and impede" the committee by giving misleading testimony to it.
In a video James Comey published to his Instagram after he was charged, he said he was innocent and charged Donald Trump of behaving like a "dictator".
"My family and I have known for a long time that there are costs to standing up to Mr Trump," he commented. "We refuse to live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he stated further. "Thus initiate a trial."
The accusations against Mr Comey came after Trump posted on online platforms insisting on his top legal official, Pam Bondi, take legal action against the former director and others.
