Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in Western Australia.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
