A massive Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the new year.

The successful offer for the 243kg fish came from the operator of a well-known sushi chain, which operates outlets domestically and abroad.

"The first tuna heralds fortune," commented the entrepreneur, a notable figure at the traditional January sale.

Dubbed the Tuna Tycoon, this industry figure is noted for making substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic year-opening auctions.

Bidding Shock and Record-Setting Past

After the auction, the successful bidder informed journalists that he was "taken aback at the winning bid," noting, "I expected we would be able to acquire it a little cheaper, but the price skyrocketed before you knew it."

This latest purchase exceeds his own historic purchases:

  • He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He paid 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Even after previously saying that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to break his own record once again.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously known for exorbitant prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by another sushi chain operator, which announced the fish would be available at its locations nationwide.

The high-energy activity at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has become a major tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no different.

Immediate Consumption

The multi-million-dollar tuna was promptly processed for diners at the entrepreneur's sushi chains immediately after the auction was finished.

"I feel like I've commenced the year in a good way after eating something so auspicious as the year gets underway," said one elated patron.
