Nigeria Confirms It Provided Intelligence for Christmas Day Airstrikes as US Official Warns of Additional Attacks
The Nigerian foreign ministry has confirmed that it played a role in the US airstrikes carried out on Christmas Day, as stated by the nation's foreign minister this week.
Former President Donald Trump previously declared the strikes targeting Islamic State militants in north-west Nigeria after a period of criticizing the organization for attacking Christians.
Detailed Discussions Came Before the Military Action
Nigeria's foreign minister, Yusuf Tuggar, indicated that he had engaged in "lengthy" discussions with America's top diplomat Marco Rubio immediately before and after the airstrike.
He further added that Nigeria's president, Bola Tinubu, had granted authorization for the airstrikes. Tuggar left the door open for additional operations, describing them as an "ongoing process" that would potentially include international partners.
"This operation had nothing to do with a specific faith," Tuggar emphasized in an interview with the BBC. "The objective is about targeting militants who have been murdering Nigerian citizens."
American Official Predicts of More Strikes in Nigeria
Hours after the Christmas Day operation, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth cautioned of additional military actions against ISIS locations in north-western Nigeria.
Hegseth described the strikes as part of efforts to stop the targeting of Christian individuals, a stance echoed by the ex-commander in chief. In a social media post, Hegseth wrote, "The president was explicit... the killing of Christian civilians in Nigeria must end. More to come..."

The holiday military operation were met with praise by certain political allies of the former president, who had been calling for a strong military reaction to the attacks against Christians.
