Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is exiting the board at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a collection of emails between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.
Summers commented in a release that he was "grateful for the chance to have contributed, excited about the potential of the company, and look forward tracking their advancement".
Summers, who formerly led Harvard University, stated on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his connections with Epstein.
The newly public communications demonstrated that the official exchanged messages with the financier until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 apprehension for suspected trafficking of minors.
In a separate statement, the technology organization stated it understood Summers' choice to step down.
"We appreciate his significant contributions and the perspective he brought to the governing body," the company remarked.
This news arrives after both chambers of Congress agreed on Tuesday to pass a legislation that would require the Department of Justice to release its documents on the case.
The legislation will then move to the desk of President Trump for approval. Trump has stated he expects to endorse the legislation, after modifying his position on the issue following pressure from his followers.
A group of Epstein-connected messages released by the House Oversight Committee recently included several high-profile figures in the billionaire's former circle, without implying any illegal behavior by those people.
The emails showed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with he often attempting to introduce Summers to notable global figures.
After the emails were shared with the general audience, he said he took "full responsibility for my ill-advised judgment to maintain interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He continued that he hoped "to reestablish faith and mend relationships with the individuals closest to me".
The economist held leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; acting as Treasury chief under the former president, and as director of the White House economic team under President Obama.
He led the university from five years and is still a faculty member there. When stating his departure from public roles recently on this week, he stated he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Following his declaration on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a liberal research organization in DC where the professor was a prominent member, confirmed that the economist was not affiliated with the group.
He joined the directorate of OpenAI, which creates the AI chatbot, in last year - following a defeated move to replace its chief executive the company leader.
