‘He returned from the brink’: Chevy Chase was in eight days in a coma during the health crisis.

The famed comedian endured a “potentially fatal” heart failure that resulted in him being put into an induced coma in 2021, as revealed in a new film about the American actor and comedian.

As documented in I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, the legend of movies such as Caddyshack and the National Lampoon series, who emceed the Oscars twice, spent a total of five weeks in the hospital.

“He wasn't right, and he couldn’t explain to me what was wrong. So, we went to the ER. His heart gave out. During those years he was drinking, he got cardiomyopathy; when the heart muscles get weaker, and they can’t pump as much blood out with each beat.”

Physicians subsequently induced him into a coma for more than a week, before warning his child, Caley: “He may not recover. We don’t know how aware he’ll be. You must prepare for the worst.”

“When he woke up, all he could do was use his vocal cords,” she added. “He has essentially been resurrected.”

Chase himself has revealed that he has dealt with recall difficulties since his hospital stay, and in the project he does not recollect some of his past on-set and backstage controversies, including a physical altercation with Bill Murray in a Saturday Night Live backstage area.

He expressed he was “upset” by his omission from the milestone special of SNL this year, at which he was in the audience but not participating.

“To be frank, it was disappointing,” he said. “I'm only now voicing this. But I thought that I should have been on the stage too with all the other actors. When co-stars Garrett and Laraine were called up, I was puzzled as to why I didn’t. I wasn't invited. Why was I overlooked?”

The 82-year-old, nearly lost his life in 1980 when he was subjected to an electrical shock on the set of Modern Problems, an accident which led to a period of severe depression.
