French authorities will start stopping small boats in Channel after British demands
French officials have consented to begin stopping migrant vessels in the English Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift follows the British leader wrote to the French leader urging him to support the initiative and stating there presently "have no effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French security forces have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative statements.
French police have infrequently intervened to prevent the heavily loaded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both officers and civilians.
"It is essential that we implement these methods this month... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel."
Currently, a French naval police representative says officers will begin taking action at sea, with the aim of protecting human life.
Significantly, the spokesperson ruled out the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had previously been reported as a possible technique to disable the engines of the vessels.
The decision to intervene at all is a significant step forward, following a short-lived change towards a more aggressive strategy this summer, which dropped off when the former Interior Minister left office.
This was demonstrated in July, in the run-up to a meeting between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were witnessed walking into the sea to slash the hulls of a vessel.
Now French authorities will once more be allowed to intercept boats prior to they collect asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of northern France, although it's not clear how the vessels will be stopped.
Strong winds are currently postponing the start of intervention operations and the human trafficking gangs will be looking for methods to adapt to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the past.
The Home Office and Downing Street have been contacted for response.
