The United States central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.
The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Shows Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
