European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to reduce security grants to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “another example” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the new year, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
