Armed conflict at educational facility
Educational institutions in Nigeria's northern region have repeatedly come under attack for weapon-wielding factions

Weapon-carrying attackers have fatally shot an educator and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a female high school in Nigeria's northwestern region, police reports indicate.

The gang of attackers invaded the comprehensive secondary school for girls in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.

The attackers "confronted officers on duty in a shootout" before scaling the perimeter fence and seizing the students from their hostel, authorities disclosed.

A school employee was fatally shot while defending the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now undergoing medical care.

Observers recounted a sizeable number of assailants, referred to locally as criminal elements, who arrived firing sporadically to generate terror.

Community members told reporters that the gunmen subsequently marched a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.

The authorities announced they had sent "additional police tactical units, together with army members and community security teams" to the area.

A organized locating and saving mission is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and believed flight corridors.

In the last several years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have regularly come under attack for armed groups, who routinely perform seizures to demand financial compensation or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The assault in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge troubling the locality, resulting in households in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they expect and desire their daughters' safe return.

Safety emergency in Nigeria's northern territories has escalated dramatically in the last several months, with learning centers experiencing the greatest impact of the unrest.
