Blues Boss Maresca Dismisses Man City Speculation as Pure Gossip
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has branded fresh talk linking him with a move to Manchester City as "100% speculation".
The Italian manager, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's right-hand man at the Etihad, responded to the ongoing rumours about his next move.
Maresca, appointed Chelsea manager in June 2024, is under contract that runs through the end of the decade, with a possible extension option.
"It doesn't bother me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca stated. "And at this moment, there is no time for such distractions."
He went on to explain, Primarily, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my attention, I said many times, is just about this club and I'm honoured to be here. But again, it's speculation. One week ago I was linked with Juventus in Italy. So I ignore it because I know that is without foundation."
Chelsea, currently sitting in fourth position in the top flight, are set to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a lunchtime kick-off.
Strain Following Previous Comments
Maresca's latest comments follow after he described a recent 48-hour period as his most difficult since arriving at Chelsea.
Those original words had sparked widespread speculation of a potential rift between the manager and the club's key decision-makers.
When pressed if he had since spoken with the club's sporting directors, Maresca responded, "We are in the same facility, so we speak about different things. But about the post-Everton press conference, no."
The manager however affirmed he would definitely stay at the club for the coming campaign and called on supporters to keep backing the team".
In brighter news, Maresca indicated that injured forwards Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return ahead of schedule, possibly available for a match against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Analysis: Unresolved Tension
The perceived strain between Maresca and the club's hierarchy remains as an open wound that still cause concern.
While there has been no further escalation of the matter publicly, there has equally been no apology forthcoming, creating the matter unaddressed.
The atmosphere during the manager's media briefings has grown increasingly strained, raising concerns it could impact what has up to now been a promising start to the season.
Chelsea's on-field situation is strong: they are in the top four in the Premier League, have qualified for the Carabao Cup last four, and can achieve a favourable European position with good results in their final games.
The lingering uncertainty is whether this behind-the-scenes dynamic might eventually disrupt a squad that was beginning to look settled.
