At a strong criticism, Brett Yormark asserted that Notre Dame AD, Pete Bevacqua, was “entirely out of bounds” for his criticisms targeting the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
Notre Dame maintains a gridiron scheduling agreement with the ACC and is a full member in other sports. The AD has argued that the ACC hurt Notre Dame’s chances to qualify for the College Football Playoff, instead campaigning for the selection of the University of Miami.
“The ACC does wonderful things for Notre Dame, but we offer tremendous football value to the ACC, and we didn’t understand why you would make an effort to try to hurt us in this procedure,” the athletic director remarked.
The Hurricanes eventually received the CFP berth over Notre Dame, largely due to winning the direct meeting between the two programs. Bevacqua also claimed that the ACC ran a targeted social media campaign over several weeks showing its support for Miami.
Later on Tuesday, Yormark spoke about the comments at the Sports Business Journal’s Intercollegiate Athletics Forum.
“My opinion is that his conduct has been out of line,” the commissioner stated. “He is totally out of bounds in his tactics and if he was in the same room, I’d tell him the same thing.”
This public criticism is especially significant given Bevacqua’s prominent position. He sits on the College Football Playoff Management Committee alongside the ten FBS conference commissioners, representing the interests of independent Notre Dame.
Yormark further pointed out the lifeline the ACC provided Notre Dame during the pandemic-disrupted 2020 season, providing the Irish a full conference schedule and a berth in its title game.
“It has been unacceptable,” he said again. “It’s been egregious attacking the ACC commissioner, when they saved Notre Dame during Covid...”
Talk had spread about Notre Dame possibly splitting with the ACC and aligning with the Big 12. However, Yormark's strong reprimand on Tuesday appear to make such a move highly improbable in the immediate future.
Notre Dame, who made the CFP final last season, have stated they are declining a bowl game after failing to qualify this year.
