"When are you speaking to Haim?" an inquiry reads. "My request was to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."
There is only a single issue: The sender also wants to be Haim's fourth member. And we're in plentiful company. A host of high-profile supporters have publicly petitioned for the honor.
The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Now they're repeated Grammy Award nominees.
Similar to the greatest ensembles, they're a tight-knit trio. Their videos frequently show them striding in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such unfettered joy you find yourself thinking, "I want to be a piece of that, too."
"The numerous instances on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a bass'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That is the greatest compliment. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire others to make music."
"And thus everyone gets an invitation to be the honorary Haim sister."
Award Nod
The band are connecting from a break, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.
They're right now processing the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in consideration for the trophy.
"I tune into the nominations every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"
The significance of the honor isn't lost on the sisters.
"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge achievement," says Alana. "But we're just thankful for the pioneers that paved the way."
Heartbreak and Candor
The project emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that unique in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to let go.
The themes follow breakups and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them determining in the moment who they are becoming.
"I love summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in blocking the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."
Refinement of Style
That recent toughness called for a fresh approach – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.
For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drums.
"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she states.
"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."
Stories and Collective Laughter
The trio's honesty shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal horror stories.
One man ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.
"During these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."
A Confident Path
You can clearly sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their position in the music world.
They're major draws, with successful albums and an global fan base.
Yet the sister act will always be their primary commitment.
"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was four," concludes Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
