Agriculture: Their Album 'The Spiritual Sound' Review – Unabashedly Gorgeous Noise from Ecstatic Black Metal Group
Every bit of elation, transcendence, and intensity of heavy music bursts forth with overwhelming force from the second album by this self-proclaimed "blissful black metal" collective hailing from Los Angeles.
The Spiritual Sound combines immense heaviness with imaginative detailing. Key track Bodhidharma propels along a guitar motif suited to a biker gang, then a burst of static and screaming introduces a melancholic post-rock middle eight. The maligned art of the widdly-woo solo is brilliantly revived by axeman Richard Chowenhill, whose lead work on this track and on standout Flea will have you floating in ecstasy – but then the gentle song the track Hallelujah showcases descending guitar melodies played with youthful innocence.
Songs such as Micah and the song Serenity are fast-paced punk rock, but the piece Dan’s Love Song is drum free and has glacial drone-metal distortion rumbling underneath its dream-pop loveliness. Melodies in black metal can often be absent or too complex, but Agriculture’s riffs and hooks are bright and original, and final track The Reply even evokes a much heavier Radiohead.
Listeners who enjoy post-metallers Deafheaven will probably love all this dynamic shifting and unabashedly gorgeous noise, particularly since Agriculture also have two distinct singing approaches, split here across two singers. Dan Meyer contributes sporadic melodic vocals, yet the standout is the other vocalist, whose voice quivers on one track but splenetically caterwauling on other songs.
In typical black metal fashion, it's difficult to discern the words she sings, yet they are worth the effort: the narratives she conveys about personal struggles and social injustice are devastating, just like her search for meaning in a world that relentlessly trends towards conflict.
