A Russian James Bond? Jude Law's Depiction of the Russian President Appears to Reinforce Kremlin-Crafted Myths

In a recent appearance, star Jude Law remarked he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for playing Vladimir Putin in a new film. This production, however, may align too neatly with the carefully constructed image circulated by Russian state media that, within Russia, it reads as a endorsement rather than a challenge.

For years, the Kremlin and the country's pop-culture machine have worked together to craft a tailor-made version of Putin. This figure is an infallible strategist devoid of flaws, an ex-intelligence officer reframed as a Russian James Bond who always knows more than he reveals.

Cinematic Reinforcement

One recent example is a television show launched last fall, directed by a Kremlin supporter. The protagonist is a invented blue-eyed lieutenant colonel inexplicably chosen to “rescue” the nation from chaos. While the character's name a different name, the message is unmistakable: the savior must be a known figure from the secret services.

International depictions frequently result in reinforcing this same narrative rather than debunking it. A new film based on a bestselling satirical novel aims to subvert the leader's mythology by presenting him as a symptom but as a consequence, shifting the narrative weight to the spin doctors around him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

In the film, Putin is shown as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to stabilise the nation because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. They visit him and all but beg him to take the top job. He replies is that he would prefer to rule from the shadows, desiring enduring influence.

This narrative is the Kremlin’s export myth: the cool, reluctant strategist guided by fate. In reality, these events ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection

Nobody ever begged him to accept the role. The position was in essence a casting call with no shortage of candidates. Central to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who expected to run the state de facto.

His list featured various figures, including a reformer later murdered and a security service director.
Per a journalist who studied Putin’s biography, the chosen candidate simply fitted the necessary criteria: obedient, from the intelligence world, and politically neutral.
A property developer familiar with the process said the primary requirement was manageability and faithfulness, not strength.

Building the 007 Persona

Experts agree that the image of Putin as a powerful KGB spy was built after the fact. Claims about his “recruitment work” in Dresden do not stand up to scrutiny. Fundamentally, he was an administrator and routine duties, a low-level clerk not involved with field operations.

Curiously, the shift to depicting him as a “007” may in part have been triggered by Daniel Craig’s debut as James Bond. The grittier version prompted local outlets and online audiences to make comparisons with Putin. Edited images replacing Craig’s face with Putin’s surfaced on city centers, fueling the growing tendency to see him as a local secret agent.

A Propaganda Win?

Given the casting, an actor popular with Russian audiences, the Kremlin will not miss the opportunity to portray this choice as a small victory. Its exclusion of mass protests, the political rivals, or key figures from its narrative, even though it includes the past decade, is a welcome aspect for official messaging.

Domestically, the president is frequently an omnipotent figure who remains unseen directly. He is signaled through photographs or orders from on high. Now, he finally acquires a famous actor's visage—one that could unintentionally echo the exact legends it might seek to examine.
