10 Fantastic Educational Breaks in the Continent for the Coming Year

Cliff Scaling in the Peaks

Including complete newcomers will soon be climbing sheltered Peak District crags on this two-day course. Learners will master securing the rope, belaying and several climbing techniques, along with descending. Modern Art in Spain

This historic hillside village, a picturesque town in Andalucía, about a short drive from Granada, is the inspiring backdrop for this painting holiday. Participants of every skill level – even beginners – will be taught how to plan and create non-representational pieces. Part of the schedule will be spent outside, working on tutorials in the open. These initial sketches and paintings will then be worked on in the studio, with guests creating a number of interpretive scenes in acrylic paint to be shown in the village. The group has exclusive access of the venue, which is set around an central patio and has a sun terrace with panoramic vistas over the countryside. The price includes five days of painting tuition; all meals; and an outing to the local castle and additional local sights.

Plant-Based Culinary in the Algarve

This sun-drenched cooking retreat, based at a villa by the river in the central Algarve, is draws inspiration from the vegetarian dishes of celebrated cooks. Guests will learn to produce meze spreads, attend a falafel-making workshop, perfect brunch dishes such as shakshuka, and make substantial main courses including a rich mushroom stew and moussaka. There are visits to the local market and a nearby winery to sample local vintages, plus leisure time for strolls by the Funcho River, to relax on the deck or take a dip in the infinity pool. This energetic camp is an uplifting, welcoming three-day adults’ street dance camp in High Wycombe. Dancers are divided into levels according to skill level, so it is suitable for those who are brand new to popping and locking, all the way to experienced performers or teachers. Sea Shanty Weekend in Cornwall

This coastal town is the perfect location for a maritime music retreat. Guests will learn historic sailing songs from a experienced musician, and try their hand at writing their own. The schedule includes voice exercises, breathing exercises, performance tips and a closing performance. The retreat is held in a rural hotel overlooking St Ives Bay. All meals are provided, including a traditional tea on arrival, cooked or continental breakfasts, packed lunches and three-course dinners. Traditional rum, unfortunately, is not included. Creative Writing in Greece

Author and lecturer Greg Mosse runs the regular sessions on this writing retreat. He explores everything from story structure, characters, setting and suspense, to sending manuscripts to publishers. Greg’s wife, the bestselling author Kate Mosse, will co-host events at the beginning and end of the week. The retreat is based at a village-style hotel in Vamos at the foot of the Lefka Ori – 10 private accommodations are set around a central garden with a pool (non-writing partners are welcome to share). On the final evening, aspiring writers mark the occasion with a musical performance in the courtyard and a final meal.

Beginners' Apiculture in Wales

The Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth runs a host of courses covering sustainability: from wildlife gardening to upcycling. This weekend introduction will help participants learn the fundamentals of beekeeping, study the biology of bees and learn about their ecological importance. It is designed to produce “ecologically mindful beekeepers”. The weekend is also a opportunity to de-stress in the centre's sustainably managed forests, which are habitat for polecats, otters, dormice, lesser horseshoe bats and rare birds. Yachting for Novices in the Blackwater Estuary

These recently launched summer sailing weekends are spent on dinghies and Dufours on the Blackwater estuary. There are non-residential and overnight options, with accommodation in basic shared rooms in the waterside training centre.
